Got a garage that’s seen better days? Don’t underestimate what a little paint and elbow grease can do to transform a tired, weathered exterior into something crisp, clean, and refreshed. Whether you’re trying to match your home’s aesthetic or give your property a little boost, updating your garage exterior is a budget-friendly DIY project that makes a huge impact.
We recently gave our freestanding garage a much-needed facelift, and the results speak for themselves! Here’s how we did it—and some tips to help you along the way.
Before you even pick up a paintbrush, take time to really assess the condition of your garage. Look for:
Prep Work Is Key
We started by washing down the entire exterior to remove years of dust, pollen, and grime. A hose with a spray nozzle or a pressure washer on a gentle setting does the trick.
Then, we scraped off old paint and lightly sanded any rough spots to help the new paint adhere better. This is also the time to replace or repair any damaged trim or siding.
We opted for a dramatic, deep taupe paint color that instantly modernized the look. The fresh paint on the siding, trim, and door gives the garage a unified and polished feel. The contrast between the neutral wall and darker door also helps the entrance pop—hello curb appeal!
TIP: Go with a satin or semi-gloss finish for doors and trim. It’s easier to clean and offers extra durability.
Small updates go a long way. We installed a new modern door handle with a keypad lock for a sleek and secure upgrade. Repainting the window trim (while leaving the old glass for character) helped bring new life without losing charm.
Pro Tip: If you have any uneven surfaces (like siding that’s seen better days), a darker paint color can actually help disguise imperfections better than a light one.
You can’t paint the grass, but you can make the entryway feel intentional. After the painting was done, we laid out a natural path in front of the door to help guide the eye and keep muddy shoes at bay. Simple pavers, gravel, or even a stepping-stone walkway can make a big difference in the functionality and visual flow of your outdoor space.
